EXCELLENT ESSAYS BY SCHOOL CHILDREN A very good grasp of the problems confronting the country in its return to a peace-time economy was disclosed by the entrants in the children’s essay competition conducted recently by the Aramoho National Savings Committee. The title of the essay was “Why We Should Continue with National Savings,” and many and varied were the reasons put forth by the entrants. The rehabilitation of our ex-service-men loomed largely in juvenile minds, while many were concerned with the plight of devastated European countries. That children were alive to the rationing situation was evidenced by the frequent references to its ultimate abolition. Some of the matter touched fin, such as U.N.R.R.A., overseas debt, internal loans, and taxation, showed that the children had explored every avenue of information on the subject of the essay. The efforts of the girls were particularly good, showing a keen grasp of essentials, while those of the boy. , though fewer in number, revealed, amc<g other things, a detailed knowledge of Army equipment, and a surprising store of facts concerning the assistance rendered to our returned men. Generally speaking, however, the main reasons fo r the continuance of National Savings were well understood by the children and the committee is very gratified with the interest shown bv the pupils of the schools concerned, namely the Anamoho School and the Holy Infancy Convent.
