COMBINED CARNIVAL OPENED
THREE DESERVING OBJECTS
In declaring the combined Wanganui carnival open, on Cook's Gardens, last night, Cr. E. W. Merewether said that during the past six years the people of Wanganui and district had played their full part, not only by contributing large sums of money to the war effort, but also in giving goods and rendering personal service. Men, in their hundreds, had gone forth from the district to fight, and they had distinguished themselves on all batlte fronts and had won the highest honours. In acknowledgment of what had been achieved, Cr. Merewether said, it was only right that the people should be prepared to do something tangible for the men of the fighting services on their return. The present appeal for £25,000, he explained, for the purpose of enlarging the present R.S.A. club, which is inadequate for the increasing membership. The second object of the appeal was for a club for the nursing services, and the third, to assist in the completion of the Scots’ Memorial Hall. Many energetic committees were at work in assisting the effort and they deserved the full cooperation of the public. In the next two weeks many forms of entertainment would be provided and Cr. Merewether hoped they would be liberally patronised. “While war had its definite responsibilities, we must not be blinded to the fact that peace also has its obligations,” said Cr. Merewether. He felt sure that the people of Wanganui and district would co-operate whole-heart-edly in seeing that the effort was crowned with success.
