NEW YEAR MEETINGS

MARTON’S THREE DAYS OF RACING Following the Manawatu Racing Club's three-day summer meeting on Boxing Day (December 26), December 27 and 29, there will be three days under the auspices of the Marton Jockey Club, on January 1 and 2, and Saturday, January 12, with the Rangitikei Racing Club sandwiched in on Saturday, January 5. The programmes arranged by the Marton Jockey Club have been approved by the Wanganui District Committee. Principal event on the programme for New Year's Day will be the Marton Cup, for which the generous stake of £BOO will be offered the corresponding events on the subsequent days being lhe Aidworth Stakes (£500) mi l the Crofton Handicap (£500). The open sprints on the respective days will be the McManaway Memorial (£350), the Telegraph Handicap (£300) and the Railway Handicap (£300). Hacks will be particularly well catered for, especially in events over a distance. The nine-furlong New Year Hack on the first day will be worth £275; the Rangitikei Hack Cup (11 miles) on the second day win carry the substantial stake of £4OO, and the Summer Hack (nine furlongs) on lhe concluding day will be worth £250. There will be a £2OO maiden race each day as well as three hurdle races over the meeting, with stakes ranging from £3OO to £250.
