METROPOLITAN TROTS

ADDINGTON PROSPECTS The New Zealand Pacing Free-for-All, run over a mile and a-half, promises to be one of the tit-bits on the second day of the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington today. No fewer than tive of the candidates have won a free-for-all, and the other seven have been placed in similar races. Gold Bar has the best credentials, having tive free-for-alls to his credit. That his phenomenal early speed has not been dimmed was clearly demonstrated by his New Zealand Cup victory on Saturday, and backers are not likely to look elsewhere for the probable winner. Haughty has secured a first, and has been placed on five occasions; Burt Scott won the Autumn Free-for-All in 1942; Indian Clipper was successful in the Champion Pacing Free-for-All in 1944, and Double Peter led the field home in the Pacing Free-for-All last Easter. Of the others, Dusky Sound has been placed in four free-for-alls, but has not won one. Loyal Friend finished second to Pacing Power in the New Zealand Sprint Championship in 1944, and was third to Double Peter and Gold Bar in the Champion Free-for-All last Easter. Bronze Eagle fought out the finish of the August Free-for-All in 1944 with Haughty, being beaten by a length. Happy Man was fourth to Double Peter, Gold Bar, and Loyal Friend in the Champion Free-for-All last Easter, and Ronald Logan vvas third to Indian Clipper and Haughty in the Autumn Free-for-All in 1944.

Horses who can jump into their stride quickly from the barrier rise have a big advantage over slow and doubtful beginners and in this respect Gold Bar has the essential qualities. Fields throughout the day promise to be of such dimensions as to ensure some more thrilling trotting, and the following may be fancied:— Holmwood Handicap.—Benghazi, Ban-

cor, Hidden Note. Lightning Handicap.—Loyal Chief Gamble King, Barometer Chimes. Australasian Handicap.—War Form, Medical Student, Jack’s Pal. New Zealand Pacing Free-for-All— Gold Bar, Loyal Friend, Bronze Eagle. Hornby Handicap.—Galvena, Scottish

Lady, Cameronian. Avon Handicap.—Sea Max, Fantom, Sure Lady. Cashmere Handicap.—Water Ranger,
