MOTHERS’ UNION
(URIST CHURCH BRANCH. The November meeting of the Christ Church branch of the Mothers’ Union was well attended. The church service was'conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young, M.A. Tea [hostesses in the Parish Hall were I Mesdames H. R. Jones. S. Giddings and C. R. White, and Dobson. i The guest speaker wa.s Miss M. E. Baker, M.A., who gave a most interesting address on the life and work of I Octavia Hill. As a young girl the 'tenements of London filled her heart I with misery and she set to work with a determination -which never admitted defeat, to better housing conditions. Her first great reform was to improve the housing conditions of the poor. Commurity centres were introduced in every settlement she had ard she believed that housing schemes should centre round the child. Her name became famous through Europe and America and workers were sent to her from cities all over England to train for the work. She begged for open spaces for recreation grounds. Money poured in and a National Trust was founded for preservation of common lancts as a national inheritance. Miss Baker was thanked for her address and presented with a snra\.
