WAR PHOTOGRAPHS
FINE EXHIBITION IN WANGANUI RAISING FUNDS FOR R.S.A. With the object of raising fund* for the Wanganui RB.A., an exhibition of official photographs and captured equipment taken by the New was opened in the old Gas Office premises, Ridgway street, yesterday afternoon. The exhibition, will be open daily and at night, from Monday t o Friday. On the ground floor, neatly arranged, are 500 photographs of the campa.gns of North Africa, Western & F ™ nCe ’ • Burma ! Ilaly ' and Pacific. They give a vivid description of the vital part played by New Zealanders in the widely scattered war sectors, and of the hardships endured in tropical heat and jungle. Of particuiar interest is what is styled “Operation Mulberry.” This is a series of 24 photographs depicting the handling and towing of artificial harbours to Normandy on "D” Day. Ranged round the walls is an excellent pictorial history of the R.A.F., in which New Zealand airmen achieved outstanding fame. A gallery of New Zealand aces includes the late Sergeant J. A. Ward, V.C., Wanganui, lhe Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal Navy and Merchant Navy and other units are all represented in the exhibition. World War 1, is recalled bv several framed photographs, including the landmg at Gallipoli by the 29th Division. lhe upstairs portion of the exhibition contains captured equipment bv the New Zealand Forces. Here is to be seen specimens of Italian, German and Japanese armaments, including light automatics, mortars, anf-tank guns, range-finders and other modern equipment. By way of centrist id a fedlcn of British arms. A visit to the exhibition is both Intcristmg and educational.
