WOMEN’S BOWLING
NEW WANGANUI CLUB GREEN OFFICIALLY OPENED An important milestone in bowling in Wanganui occurred yesterday, when tire Wanganui Women’s Bowling Club green on Somme Parade was officially opened by the Mayor Hon. W. J. Rogers. There was a large attendance, which included women bowlers from outside centres, including several from Palmerston North. Associated with the Mayor was Mrs. G. P. Hawkins, president of the Wanganui Bowling Club, Mrs. E. P. Allan, Castlecliff, president of the Manawatu and West Coast Women's Bowling Association, Cr. G. P. Hawkins, and the town clerk, Mr. C. R. White.
In introducing the Mayor, Mrs. Hawkins expressed pleasure at the large attendance, which she said was indicative of the keen interest taken in women's bowls. She expressed appreciation of the co-operation given the club by past and present City Councils and members of men's bowling clubs and those had made donations of equipment to the club. Mrs. Hawkins said it was a fine gesture to see such a fine muster of women bowlers from other centres present at the ceremony'that day. In declaring the green open, the Mayor congratulated the Wanganui Women's Bowling Club on their enterprise and initiative. The club and its members deserved encouragement and he wished it a successful season.
Mrs. Allan, for the Women's Bowling Association, thanked the City Council for its co-operation and wished Mrs. Hawkins and her club members every success in the future.
The Mavor threw the first jack and Mrs. E. Kenrick senr., who is more than 80 vears of age and a club supporter, rolled up the first bowl. After morning tea, tournament play followed.
