FRANCE GOES LEFT
THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS Recd. 12.35 a.m. Paris, Sept. 24. Progress results from yesterday’s French municipal elections, the first since 1937, reveal that the people of France appare <tly have swung strongly to the left. The Socialists, with one-third of the ballots returned, have gained 102 seats and the Communists 23 at the expense of the Right Wing and centre groups. F.nal returns will *ot be available for at least a week. Women voted for the first time, and at least one woman has been elected. Elected persons so far include the pre-war Premier, M. Herriot and also four of De Gaulle’s Ministers. Diethelm is the only Minister so far to fail to gai i a majority, but has another chance next week.
