FIVE AND A-HALF YEARS SPLENDID WORK

To marke the close of activities of lhe little organisation known as “The Friendly Circle,” a very pleasant social function was hold last Thursday a the residence of Mrs. Charlton Pearce, of Bignell Street. Five and a half years ago Mrs. Pearce and her daughter, Mrs. Sykes, originated a scheme for raising funds for patriotic purposes. The society, with a membership of twenty-two, was formed, and weekly gathering were held over the period. As a result of the work and contributions from its own members, the Friendly Circle has raised the sum of £662. Of this £174 had been donated to the Gonville branch of lhe Red Cross Society, and the remainder was invested in parcels, numbei ing 1034 for Gonville Armyaids serving overseas. Besides their monetary effort the members knit.cd, and made up, 8 peggy square rugs. These they presented Io lhe Red Cross tor use on hospital ships. Over the years’ associations lhe society have

enjoyed particularly congenial relations, and they view with pride the fact that no semblance of ill nature ever marred their gatherings. As a token of l’no esteem in which snt is held, and also in appreciation o,f the work bo’ ne by her as hon. secretary to the Friendly Cirifo for 5* years, the members prevailed on Mrs. Sykes to accept from them a small gnc in tnc form of a hanging mirror. Mrs. Sykes suitably responded. For their joint work in keening a record • m the “Black Book.” small presentations were made to Mesdames Hickman and Mackenzie.
