CRAMOND BAY

MARANGAI HANDICAP SUCCESS DEBUTANT STAKES WON BY KIRSTYMAC The Trentham-owned and trained Cramond Bay, winner of the Halcombe Memorial at New Plymouth a week earlier, added the Marangai Handicap to his credit on Saturday, when the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting opehed. This was the principal event, and the second “leg" of the double resulted in the Fordelltrained Kuri winning at his first essay in open ranks and his first race since last Easter, when he won the Oroua Hack Cup at Feilding. The Nizami filly Kirstymac trained at New Plymouth, won the Debutant Stakes, first race of the season for two-year-olds. These three winners were well backed, but surprises were sprung in the Okehu Hurdles, Nanook returning nearly a third of a century, and in the first division of the Malden Race, the Stratford - trained Dymondy paying over a quarter of a century. A handy dividend, short of double figures came the way of supporters of Stony Broke, who won the Putiki Hack Handicap for Mrs. M. S. Curie, of Westmere, Stony Broke is trained at Wanganui by J. Boyd. With large fields engaged, It was necessary to run two events in divisions, making ten, races in all, and as a result of considerable delay before the second of these division races, the Durie Hack, the programme got behind schedule to the extent of close on half an hour. This leeway could not be made up during the afternoon. The late scratching of Broielov came after the totalisator had been opened, otherwise divisions could have been obviated. As a result the connections of Broieiov were fined £lO. The weather in the morning was changeable after overnight rain and a heavy shower shortly before the first race may have affected the attendance. Nevertheless the crowd was a large one, with visitors from a wide area. The totalisator handled practically ail the money oyering, investments totalling £43,958, an increase of £16,501 over the £27,557 registered for the corresponding day last year. Smart Nizami Filly.

With W. J. Broughton in the saddle the Nizami filly Kirstymac, which had led home the “parade” at New Plymouth the previous Saturday, was installed favourite for the Debutant Stakes, and she eventually won easily fiom Blue Simon, a Revelation colt which had been runner-up at New Plymouth. Royal Baron and Kirstymac began the best from Blue Simon, Blue Tie, Bramerton, Scroll and Indira, but the filly soon had a clear lead and turned for home three lengths ahead of Royal Baron and Blue Simon. The latter challenged a furlong from home but Kirstymac held on well to win nicely. Blue Tie came on for third, three lengths back, and Royal Baron, Bramerton Mr Pym and Indira were three lengths clear of Cinereous am: Yalta.

Kiwi Pai and Fox-brae led early in the Okehu Hurdles, but Fox-brae soon assumed command and piloted the field for the greater part of the journey. He was followed across the top by Gold Money Song, Our Nation, Nanook and Colonel Bogey, but Nanook headed him when they landed over the last hurdle and came on to win handily. Fox-brae lasted just long enough to beat Our Nation by a head for second money, with Colonel Bogey three lengths away fourth. Then came Gold Money Song, Peach King and Rhodes. Maiden Race Surprise.

Only six of the 44 acceptors dropped out of the Maiden Race. The first division provided a splendid finish, Buckle, Brown Derby, Delinquent,

Michael and Dymondy being almost on terms a furlong from home, where Brown Derby ran out wide, finishing along the lawn rails and leaving Dymondy, Michael and Delinquent to cross the line almost on terms, with noses only separating them.

Second Seal improved sufficiently cm his New Plymouth display to win the second division comfortably by six lengths from Merciful, who was two lengths ahead of Pay Acre and Provider. He gave Broughton his second winning mount on the day. Another division race followed in «*e Durie Hack, though Broielov’s scratching reduced the field to safety proportions. White Cap, Battle Survey and Wayside led over the early stages, but Battle Survey ran to the front at the straight entrance to win well from Wayside and The Grand. Battle Survey was Broughton’s third winner. Controller piloted the field in the< second division to the half-mile, but Lord Coronach then assumed command and led into the straight from Kilarney Boy and Lily Ann, going on for a comfortable win. Lily Ann and Home Rule filled the minor places, with Montosorrie fourth. Lord Coronach, ridden by the Wanganui apprentice G. Ivil,' was the third winner saddled up by H. Dulieu, of New Plymouth. Second Win on End.

Lord Darnley was backers’ choice for the Marangai Handicap, but Cramond Bay allowed the favourite to pilot the field to the distance and then came away for a comfortable win. Lord Darnley held on well for second, clear of Keen Play, who finished solidly, and Ganges was next, with Duality, Macedoine, Black Plato and The Monarch all coming home strongly. Scratchings reduced the Seafield Hack to safety proportions, and Master Ted was made favourite. He was handily placed behind Tifox and Specialist three furlongs from home, where Lady Chips was in the middle of the field and Solver was improving his position. Over the final stages Lady Chips challenged Master Ttd and beat him by a short head, with Solver barely a length away and Treasure Tee fourth. Wanganui-trained Winner. Stony Broke atoned for his New Plymouth defeat when he outstayed his opponents in the Putiki Hack Handicap. He shared the lead with Village Squire till Hulabaloo headed them three furlongs from home, but Stony Broke came again to be going away at the finish. Hulabaloo and Dark Morning had a great tussle for second place and on the line the judge could not separate them. Foxstar was fourth, ahead of Scarteen. Another local success was registered in the Flying Handicap, in which Kuri came with a telling run on the outside to beat Royal Heir and Leybourne, with Colonel Vaals, Bridge Acre Derrogue and Lord Theio in line behind them. Kuri, who is owned by Mr. W. McA. Duncan, is a four-year-old gelding by Foxbridge from Black Cat, therefore a half-brother to Red Cat, who won many good races for Mr. Duncan.
