WANGANUI CARD

OPENING DAYS FIELDS REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS With approximately 190 acceptors in the eight events carded for the opening clay of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting the club appears to have broken all records here, and even with dual engagements the average is well over twenty a race. Provision has been made for divisions in three races, and there does not appear to be any present prospect of avoiding these divisions, though in the Seafield Hack the safety number is exceeded by five and in the Doric Hack by four. The lirst event is set down for 11.25 a.m. and intervals are approximately 45 minutes. Betting will be on the single-pool system, with dividends on first and second only, and in the division races the dividends will be on the winners only. The track is expected to be in excellent order and is not likely to be adversely affected by yesterday’s light rain. NO FORM FOR JUVENILES It may not be appreciated by investors that no form is available as a guide for the opening event, the Debutante Stakes, as the two-year-olds have had little opportunity in recent parades. The twenty acceptors, if all are started, may present a problem for the starter. Four of the youngsters are locally-trained these being Mr. Pym and three fillies, All Bay, Gay Tide and Enard Bay. The quartet may not be as forward as some of the visitors. Kirstymac and Blue Simon, leaders in the parade at New Plymouth last Saturday, may make more appeal. Others with good prospects are the Julius Caesar-Rosswood bracke., Opulent, Royal Baron and Indira. With seventeen engaged in the Okehu Hack Hurdles there should be an interesting display over the battens. and Peter’s Choice, Our Nation and Norse (a winner on the course last June) may be fancied. Colonel Bogey. Gold Money Song. Tatara Lad and Bravura also have good credentials.

The large field in Ihe Maiden Race —there were 44 acceptors—may affect the totalisator turnover, but backers are in a position of being able to pick two winning chances, with a “saver” in that all but. four of the field are included in brackets, giving investors a second chance. Form in the two divisions is conspicuous by its absence, but in the first division Patta Fe, Brown Derby (if started here) and El Santo, may appeal, and in the second division Second Seal, Tremello and Te Heroine should have friends. Some good hack sprinters are engaged in the Durie Hack Handicap, which may be another divided event. Broielov was unlucky at Now Plymouth and Lord Coronach is likely to improve. Paganini, Battle Dance and Battle Survey may be fancied in the first division and Golden Kea, Controllei and Drambuie should have friends in the other. PRINCIPAL EVENT

Topweight in the principal event, the Marangai Handicap, Macedoine would have an excellent chance if in term, but backers may prefer Keen Play, who was placed at New Plymouth, Cramond Bay, winner of the nine-furlong Halcombe Memorial last Saturday. Lord Darnley, runner-up in the Parliamentary Handicap, and Ganges, a dual winner in hack ranks at Trent ham.

The safety number of 20 at the seven-and-a-quarter furlong barrier may require the Seafield Hack Handicap to be run in two divisions, as there were 25 acceptors. Lady Chips, Don Mac. Tifox, Silver Pal and Brown Derby appear to have good prospects in the first division, while best of those in the second division appear to bo Master Ted. Solver, Specialist and Dark Morning. The nineteen carded for the Putiki Hack Handicap makes th* held two under the safety number. Hulabaloo would have to improve on his NewPlymouth form to foot, it with some of the hacks to which he has now; to concede weight. Probably Sporting Way, a recent winner in Hawke’s Bay, will dispute favouritism with Roto Parera. Magnus Lux, Scarteen and Stony Broke.

The defection of Theolateral and the probable absence of Tara King will not weaken the Flying Handicap Held appreciably, for there are prospects of a slashing contest. Poutatau is hard to beat in form, and Royal Heir probably' has the best credentials, though it is a trifle early in the season for him. Lower down in the handicap are Derryogue, Bridge Acre, Plato Lad and Leybourne. The following may appeal to investors:— Debutant Stakes—Kirstymac, Opulent. Julius Caesar. Maiden Race. —First division: Patta Fe. Brown Derby (or Tallinn). Second division: Second Seal, Tremello. Durie Hack Handicap.—First division: Broielov. .Battle Dance. Second division: Golden Kea, Lord Coronach. Marangai Handicap.—Cramond Bay. Keen Play, Lord Darnley. Seafield Hack Handicap.—First division Lady Chips, Brown Derby (or Silver Psi). Second division: Muster Ted, Solver. Putiki Hack Handicap.—Sporting Way. Magnus Lux. Hulabaloo. Flying Handicap. - Bridge Acre. Derryogue. Leybourne. Following arc the acceptors: -
