JAPANESE SADISM

GENERAL’S STORY SLAPPED, STRIPPED, fORCED TO PRAY TO EMPEROR

Recd. 8 p.m. San Francisco, Sept. 7. Major-General Albert Jones, who has arrived home, told a bitter story of sadistic abuse of prisoners by the Japanese, including the slapping and beating of General Wainwright (the United States hero of Corregidor) and Lieutenant-General Sir A. E. Percival (British commander-in-chief in Malaya when the Japanese captured that country). Major-General Jones was captured on Bataan in April, 1942, and participated in the “death march.” Then he was transferred to Formosa. He said that it was at this camp that the Japanese slapped and beat Generals Wainwright and Percival. “We were worked and starved and were stripped on parade, slapped in public, forced to pray three times daily to the Emperor, made to bow to Japanese privates and civilians. We were transferred to three other camps, finishing at Mukden, where there was treatment and sadism we never previously had known. Some were beaten and killed.”

A Washington message says thal the Senate has approved of the promotion of General Wainwright, lo full general. Kecd. 10 p.m. Manila, Sept. 7. General Wainwright, at a Press conference declined to comment on the report that he was beaten and slappea by the Japanese. He added: “I will have more to say on that officially when 1 arrive in Washington.”
