WANGANUI CLUB’S REPORT MEMBERSHIP DRIVE. With the return from overseas of servicemen a big drive for membership will have to be made for the coming season states the report of the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Club to be presented to the annual meeu ng to be held on Wednesday of next week. “The courts again played excellently, six being in constant use throughout the season. The remainder have been maintained at the same standard, but a more extensive topdress.ng will be necessary next autumn.

“Much credit for the state of the courts is due to the groundsman. Mr. A. J. Williams, who has comp.eted over 20 years of service with the club. His constant loyalty has been of inestimable benefit to the club. “The thanks of the club are also due to a small band of members headed by the secretary who, during the winter months, topped all the trees on the southern end of the courts.

Because of Easter falling at an earjy date this year the committee decided to run an open tournament in an endeavour to ra.se funds for the club. Owing to the excellent support received from local and visiting players (there were 50 visiting players from all parts of the North Island) the results exceeded expectations. Aided by ideal tennis weather the tournament proved a big success, and the thanks of the club are due to the club tournament committee, Messrs. Cook. Ogier, Perkins and the honorary secretary for the excellent manner in which it handled the preliminary organisation and actual running of the tournament in which 99 players took part. Much valuable help was also received from Messrs. M. C. Pidwell, A. R. Lowe and many others, and opportunity is taken by the committee of expressing appreciation and thanks. The thanks of the club are due to ”-ho carried out with credit, the duties of honorary taj release from the Army in February, of Mr. T. N. HayCampbell. The commtit tee also has to record the loss at the end of the year of the hon. treasurer, Mr. N. R. Dix, who has been transferred to Auckland. Mr D’x has been one of the hardest working members of the committe and his pk _e wil] be difficult to fill.

An enjoyable visit to the Marton Lawn Tennis Club was made by a club team during the season and opportunity is taken of recording appreciation of the manner in which the team was entertained.
