AMATEUR BOXING

CONTESTS IN OPERA HOUSE ON WEDNESDAY 4 Keen public interest is being taken in the amateur boxing contests to be held in the Opera House next Wednesday, under the control of the revived Wanganui Boxing Association. Boxing champions from Wellington, Hawera, Patea, Marton and Palmerston North will take part along with the best of the local boys. Teams are:—

Wellington.—Ahearn, Weller( lightweight cnampion), Karam Suha (Hindoo champion, who is a great draw card), Newton, Beaseman and Wagner.

Palmerston North.—Hubbard, Sellars, Hastings, Stevens, Foster. Three of this numoer competed in the Wellington championships, Patea.—Cooper, Stanford and Pascoe. Ohakea. —Morrison, Lullum, and Majestic.—Barr (late Marlborough), Farrell. McClintoff’s Gymnasium—Les Head, Len Head, Ron Head and Fyfe. Brown’s Gymnasium, —■ Conners, Loughlan, Bassen, and Demme. St. Joseph’s Gymnasium.—G. Williams (ex-Silverstream College) and Gosnell. Gosnell and Conners are to be the opening bout. Each youngster weigns ost 81b. and shows a good deal of science. Demme has the reputation ot being a K.O. artist. Boyd, heavyweight cnampion of Taranaki, is unavailable, but nas agreed to light McLullum, Ohakea champion, on October 3, when the first proiessional contest will be staged. The last light of the first j ~ ind will be a six-round contest, and the final bout of the night will also be a sixrounder.

Patea nominations were winners of the Taranaki championships and will go to Hastings to compete in the iNorth Island championsnips later. Local boys who were nominated but not matched will have seats resetvc-d for them in the circle, but may be called upon to fill a breach. Official seconds will be Messrs. Lou Koorey and Bill Gray, while Messrs. Jones, Hamilton and Terry Mullins, an ex-champion, will divide the refereeing. J udges will also act.
