EXPLOIT AT SINGAPORE
Rccd. 7.30 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 6. Two midget submarines from H.M.S. Bonaventure. Royal Navy submarine depot ship now’ in Sydney, sneaked underneath the Japanese heavy cruiser Takao in Jahore Strait, near Singapore, on July 31, and divers from the submarines attached timefuse mines to the cruiser’s hull. It is believed the vessel was blown up. Coinciding with this exnloit. another midget submarine from the Bonaventure cut the Saigon-Janan and Saigon-Singapore cables at the entrance to Saigon Harbour.
These daring activities were revealed officially by Captain W. R. Fell, 0.E.E., D.S.C., R.N., of the Bonaventure. who is a New Zealander and who has been in the Roval Navy for 30 years. He said the Bonaventure’s first, mission was th? crinpling of the German battleship Tirpifz. Th? midget submarines nut the Tirnitz out of action long enough to enable her to be sunk bv the R A F.
