CHAMPION CYCLIST
LATE MR. S. W. CRUICHLEY Mr. Stanley William Cruichley whose death occurred recently was a former champion professional cyclist in Wanganui. He took up the sport at the age of 14, after being crippled with leg trouble, and continued to ride until he was 45. He held dozens of championship honours throughout the Dominion on both the road and the track, and on one occasion, broke the record in Taranaki’s round-the-mountain race. In addition to cycling, Mr. Crutchley was an active member of the Pirates Football Club, the Aramoho Boating Club, and was a boxer who acted as sparring partner for Tom Heeney and other champions when they came to Wanganui. Born in Wanganui and educated at the Marist Brothers’ School, Mr. Crutchley was later employed by the N.Z. Refrigerating Co. at Imlay works and before the war was in charge of the wool room there. Latterly, he was employed by the Public Works Depar ment as a foreman in Wellington. He was not married.
