WARM WELCOME GIVEN

EX-PRISONERS OF WAR ARRIVE HOME Wanganui extended a warm welcome yesterday afternoon to city and Taranaki district repatriated prisoners of war who disembarked from the Orient Line troopship Orion at Wellington earlier in the day. The men were from the United Kingdom and when they arrived at the city at 2.45 p.m., punctual to the minute, the debussing point near the old Post Office building was crowded with people. The draft included 32 men lor Wanganui and 63 for Taranaki. Five Railway Road Cervice buses were engaged to transport the men from Wellington. After being entertained at afternoon tea in Wanganui the Taranaki men resumed their journey. The afternoon tea was arranged by the Wanganui Centre of the Red Cross Society. The men were briefly welcomed by the chairman of the executive, Mr. W. D. Young, and the president of the Wanganui Returned Services’ Association, Mr. C. S. Smith.

There were many glad reunions as Wanganui men stepped off the buses. They were met by representatives of tne City Council, the City Patriotic Committee and the R.S.A. Transport was available for the men and their immediate next-of-kin.
