YOUNG FARMERS DEBATE

MARTON BEATS BULLS The final debating contest in the southern zone, which is the semifinal for the district, was held in the Clifton Hall, Bulls, on Wednesday evening. The motion: “That Straightout Grassland Farming is More Economic than Grassland Farming, Supplemented with Cropping," was supported by the Bulls team (Messrs. R. J. Jamieson, H. Clark, and F. Thorby), who were defeated by the Marton team (Messrs. M. F. Gray, K. G. Coles and H. R. Miller) by the narrow margin of 14 points. The debate proved most Interesting, as the subject is a highly controversial one, and in the closing stages arguments became quite heated on both sides, which showed that each team was determined to prove its case, irrespective of whether they were arguing with the courage ot their convictions or not. A considerable amount of laughter also showed the friendly spirit of rivalry which existed. Congratulations go to the Bulls team for the able way in which they handled the more difficult side of the subject. Congratulations also go to Mr. Thorby, who was adjudged the best speaker of the evening. Mr. F. T, Harper, who is t.n advisory member to the district committee, was the adjudicator. After he had given his verdict and criticism ot the speakers, he gave a very good summary of the subject and, in particular, told the Bulls team how they could have made much more of the limited material at their disposal. Had the Marton team been confronted with the subject presented in this way. the decision might easily have been reversed. The Marton team wishes to thank the Bulls Club for its hospitality. The final will be between Marton and Mangaweka some time next month, and will probably be held in Marton. The subject is: ‘That Environment is ot Greater Importance to the Individual Animal than is Heredity."
