HOLD IN TENGCHUNG
Recd. 6 p.m. Chungking, Aug. 23. The Chinese control about one-third of Tengcnung after bitter fighting, says a Chinese communique. They are slowly driving the Japanese towards the centre of the city. United States airmen are strafing the Japanese in the north-west corner of the city. The Chinese scored minor gains in Sungsha and Lungling.
