CARPENTERS TO WALK TO WORK

CONTROVERSY DEVELOPS ON TRAVELLING TIME At a special meeting of the Wanganui Carpenters’ Union last night, held to consider the travelling time controversy, it was unanimously decided that members in future walk to work. The men affected are those working under the “modification order,” governing State housing, hospitals and defence works. Hitherto the rule regarding travelling time was that workers be paid 3s 3d per hour for every three miles after the first mile and a-half between a central point and the job. It is understood that the local employers contend that payment of 3s 3d per hour for a cycling rate of 10 miles an hour, plus 2s 6d weekly cycle allowance, is reasonable. The workers, it is stated, contend that a reasonable definition is that contained in a ruling by Mr. Gilmour at Auckland, that payment be made at the rate of 3s 3d an hour for every three miles walked.
