In the opening day's events at the Hawera Competitions Society’s -annual festival on Monday, Esme Bailey (Wanganui) won the dance tor tiny tots, under eight years. There were 15 competitors. A suggestion that in order to remedy the difficulty caused by children travelling on the St. John’s Hill bus service losing their tickets, p distinctive badge be placed on sale and worn by the children, has been considered by the Tramways Committee, but in the meantime the question has been deferred. In the presence of a large attendance the opening matches ot the quadrangular primary schools’ Rugby tournament, between Manawatu, Rangitikei, Taranaki and Wanganui, were played yesterday on Spriggens Park. The standard of play for schoolboys was good. The goal-kicking ot Reid, a Rangitikei player, was outstanding, one of his efforts in the match against Taranaki being from ■25 yards out and at an acute angle. This afternoon Rangitikei will meet Wanganui in the early game, and Taranaki will be opposed by Manawatu in the second match. The tournament will conclude to-morrow.
