BATTLE IN ITALY SEVERE FIGHTING IN LIRI VALLEY. Recd. 11.50 p.m. London, May 28. “The battle continues with undiminished intensity against strong opposition in some sectors," states today's Allied communique from Italy. “No spectacular advances were made on any part of the front. The lighting has been very severe, particularly in the Liri Valley and south of Velletri and Valmontone. Progress, however, has been made, especially in the sector between Sangiovanni and Sezze. which was taken late on Thursday. A French cruiser, in support of the Army, yesterday successfully bombarded enemy positions north of the Anzio area and silenced hostile guns. Two destroyers also engaged targets with good results. Fighter-bombers were out in strength yesterday, attacking bridges, guns, troop concentrations and roads in the battle area, and the Rome area. Medium-bombers attacked a number of rail bridges between Arezzo and Pontassieve. Escorted heavy bombers, in great strength, attacked railways yards in Luignon and Nimes, 30 miles from Montpellier, and airfields al Salon Montpellier with good results. A further force attacked the port of Ra zanik, on the Dalmatian coast. Roads in the Viterbo area were bombed last night. About 60 enemy planes were sighted in daylight, seven of which were destroyed. Nineteen oi ours are missing. We flew more than 3000 sorties.
