CANDIDATES GIVE THANKS
CLEAN MAYORAL CONTEST When the final results of the Mayoralty were made known, shortly before 7.15 p.m., the Hon. W. j. Rogers, M.L.C., who retained his seat with a majority of 937, and the unsuccessful candidate, Dr. G. J. Adams, briefly addressed a large crowd that had assembled outside the Drill Hall, headquarters of the chief returning officer, Mr. C. R. White. Both candidates paid warm tributes to the clean spirit in which lhe campaign had been fought, and their remarks were applauded. Expressing thanks to the electors, Mr. Rogers said that their verdict, was not only for him, but for one of the worthiest women in the city.’ He was glad that the people of Wanganui had made their decision in this way, in spite of what had happened in his personal affairs. Mr. Rogers congratulated Dr. Adams and his associates on the good showing they had made during the campagin. This contest, Mr. Rogers added, had been fought according to the rules of good sportsmen. “Dr. and Mrs. Adams have done good work in the city, and I feel sure that, like Mrs. Rogers and myself, now that the Mayoral issue is decided, they will continue to give their services unstintingly to Wanganui.”
At the conclusion of his address. Mr. Rogers called for three cheers for Dr. and Mrs. Adams, the crowd responding with enthusiasm. Congratulating Mr. Rogers on his success, Dr. Adams assured the Mayor of whole-hearted co-operation during his further term of office. The campaign had been very clean, and contesting against such a good opponent as Mr. Rogers had been a pleaDr. Adams thanked, all who had supported him and called for three cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Rogers.
