MR. ROGERS’ SIXTH WIN PREVIOUS CONTESTS The Hon, W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., has won his sixth Mayoral victory in Wanganui. He was successful on five occasions in the past and was only beaten once. It was in May, 1927, that lie first became Mayor, defeating Mr. Hope Gibbons. In 1929 there was a triangular contest for the Mayoralty, and the polliog resulted:—Mr. Rogers 5145, Mr. Hope Gibbons 2435, Mr. John Morrison (who entered the campaign at a late hour), 760. Tlfcre were 8340 valid votes, with 71 informal.

In 1931, Mr. N. G. Armstrong opposed Mr. Rogers and was successful, polling 4855 votes to 4706 polled byMr. Rogers. In 1933 Mr. Rogers did not seek Mayoral honours, and Mr. Armstrong was opposed by Mr. J. T. Hogan, Mr. Armstrong being successful by 4842 votes to 3944.

In 1935 Mr. Armstrong did not seek re-election. The two candidates on that occasion were Mr. Rogers and Mr. W. M. Falconer. Mr. Rogers was elected, polling 5734 votes to 4743 by Mr. Falconer. There were 10,477 valid votes, with 66 informal.

In J 9 38 Mr. Rogers was opposed by Mr. G. H. Trott, but won the election by a majority of 3943. The polling was: Mr. Rogers 6958, Mr. Trott 3015. There were 56 informal votes. At the 1941 election Mr. Rogers was again successful, polling 4858 to Mr. E. B. Tustin's 3475.
