POST OFFICE FAREWELL

TRIBUTES TO MR. W. COOK Having completed 40 years’ service with the Post, and Telegraph Department, Mr. W. Cook, accountant, Money Order and Savings Bank branch, Chief Post Office, Wanganui, has retired on superannuation. Many tributes to the high esteem in which he is held by executive officers and staffs of all branches were paid at a recent farewell gathering. Speakers included the chief postmaster, Mr. C. B. McNatty, the senior supervisor, telegraph branch, Mr. A. Andrews, the chief clerk, Mr. N. R. Wallace, the acting-accountant, Mr. R. F. Barber, the senior supervisor, postal branch, Mr. W. Hudson, the acting-supervisor, Money Order and Savings Bank branch, Mr. R. S. Loader, the acting assistant-account-ant, Mr. F. Wilson, who presided, and Mr. G. Edmonas, who spoke on behalf of the staff.

Transport difficulties prevented representatives from district suboffices from being present, but many letters and messages of goodwill, all referring to Mr. Cook’s ability and friendly co-operation, were read at the gathering. A letter was also received from Mr. J. Gillick, district organiser, National Savings, who is on leave. Mr. Gillick thanked Mr. Cook for his ready assistance during recent war loan campaigns. Speakers referred to Mr. Cook’s capabilities and his manner toward the staff. He was also regarded as a very efficient officer in whom every member had complete confidence. His work, general outlook and sympathetic understanding had always been an inspiration to others. On behalf of the staff Mr. McNatty presented Mr. Cook with a fireside chair. By a coincidence three senior officers present at the gathering joined the department in Southland and were serving in that district at the same time. They were Messrs. McNa;ty, Wallace and Cook.

Returning thanks, Mr. Cook referred to the fine spirit of co-opera-tion which existed in Wanganui and commented that he had always appreciated the consideration shown by his colleagues. Mr. Cook served also at Invercargill, Dunedin and Wellington. He was assistant accountant at Wanganui for about four years, after which he was appointed supervisor, Monev Order and Savings Bank branch, Wellington. About 18 months ago he returned to Wanganui on being promoted accountant.
