DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB

FIELDS FOR SATURDAY

INJUREDJOCKEYS ELLERSLIE RACE MISHAPS

P. Burgess, the Trentham trainer and jockey, is in Auckland Hospital suffering from concussion and lacerations received when his mount, Gay Winkle, fell during the running of the second division of the Grey Handicap at Ellerslie on Monday. Burgess was not seriously hurt, and the Auckland Hospital authorities reported that he was doing well and making good progress towards recovery. O. Forbes, apprentice, Te Rapa, and D. Gundry, apprentice, Cambridge, are also in hospital with concussion received from falls from Dark Gold and Irish Pearl respectively. Gundry also fractured a collarbone. The jockeys F. Hain. L. Pell and B. Meyer were also involved in falls at Ellerslie on Monday and were treated in the casualty room for minor injuries.

Broughton was involved in the fall in which Gay Winkle was destroyed, but was thrown clear over the running rail on to the sand track and escaped injury. He was able to ride later in the day.

Beginner’s Luck. A novice at the trots at Alexandra Park last week, a service girl, had the usual beginner’s lack. Induced to put ten shillings on Hilda Potts, her delight at the prospect of a dividend turned to disapopintment when, on. her horse running second to Highland Scott, it was pointed out to her that she had hacked the horse ’for a win and not for a place. So she tore up the ticket and threw it down. Then Highland Scott was disqualified and Hilda Potts placed as winner. The service girl and friends made a frantic hunt for her torn-up ticket and managed to retrieve the pieces. To her surprise the tote paid her twice 'the amount she had expected. She had picked up and pieced together not her own 10/- ticket, but someone else's fl ticket.
