OBITUARY

MRS. L. I. LARKING. Born in Wanganui in 1863, Mrs. L. I. Larking, of Wanganui East, died recently. She saw Wanganui grow from a small settlement to its present status. A devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, she took an active part in church work and assisted many causes. Mrs. Larking was a valued member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the Early Settlers’ Association. Her husband predeceased her 10 years ago. She is survived by two sons, Messrs. H. O. and V. D. Larking, Wanganui. The funeral service, which took place at the Aramoho cemetery, was conducted by the Rev. W. J. 'Berry. The pall-bearers were Messrs. C. Larking, N. Collinge, W. C. Hudson and G. Edmonds. MR. A. J. BLAND A member of the staff of the head office of the Railways Department, Mr. Arthur John Bland, died at Lower Hutt on Wednesday, at the age of 61. His hobbies included art printing, photography, numismatics, and astronomy, and he was a member of the Wellington Shakespeare Club. MR. F. McCANN A former well-known resident of the West Coast of the South Island, Mr. Francis McCann, died in Wellington recently, at the age of 54. For several years he was licensee of the Shamrock Hotel, at Addison’s, eight miles from Westport, but went to Wellington about a year ago, and joined the staff of the Public Works Department. He had been in poor health recently. MR. H. GOTLIEB. Mr. Harry Gotlieb, a well-known tailor, who had been in business in Lambton Quay, Wellington, for many years, became suddenly ill on Wednesday afternoon and died on his way to the hospital in the Free Ambulance. Aged 59 years, Mr. Gotlieb resided in Matai Road, Hataitai. MR. JOSEPH MAUDESLEY The death is reported from Takapau, Hawke’s Bay, of Mr. Joseph Maudesley, at the age of 92 years. Mr. Maudesley, who was born in England, came to New Zealand in 1885. He settled in Takapau some 50 years ago, retiring from business about 30 years ago. He was one of the foundation members of the Takapau Presbyterian Church, being in former days choirmaster, treasurer, and school superintendent. His wife predeceased him some 24 years ago. Mr. Maudesley was a justice of the peace of old standing.
