WANGANUI BEAT CHRIST’S IN HRST FOURS SECOND FOURS TO VISITORS Rowing well within themselves, the Wanganui Collegiate School first four beat Christ’s College, Christchurch, on the Wanganui River yesterday by the margin of one length. The race for the second fours between the two schools was won by Christ's College by a length The races were contested over a mile course, finishing at the Aramoho wharf. Perfect weather conditions prevailed and the events were watched by a large crowd of spectators. There was hardly a ripple as the first fours lined up for their race. Both boats were well out in the river, with the visitors nearer the Aramoho bank. Both crews went away to a good start, the oars of the rival crews dipping simultaneously. For the lirst three dozen strokes the crews held together but at the quarter-mile peg the Wanganui boat had forged into a slight lead, with Christ’s hanging on determinedly. The Wanganui crew, rowing well, increased their lead to half a length, but Christ's College challenged hotly and reduced rhe leeway to draw level at the half mile. Caplen, the stroke of the Wanganui crew, called on his crew and. responding to a man, they slowly but surely pulled away from Christ’s, going on to win by a good length from the southern four amid scenes of enthusiasm from School's supporters. The crews were:— Wanganui Collegiate School.- -II E. Caplen (stroke). F. M. B. Kight, H. C.Faulke, J. G. Masterson (bow). J.' Jardine (cox). Christ’s College.—Quaife (stroke), D. Gould, Kay, Glasgow (bow). Sheppard (cox). In the second fours Christ's College had the better of the start and went into a half-length lead which they maintained till 'half-way. Wanganui reduced the lead slightly, but the visitors came with a strong finish to win by a length. The crews were:— Christ’s College.—Cook (stroke), A. Gould, R. Gould, Harris (bow). Sheppard (cox). Wanganui Collegiate School.—R. E. B. Peren (stroke), H. G. Webb. R. G. K. de Castro, R. J. Adams (bow). J. G. Brandon (cox). Mr. R. O. C. Marks was coach of the Wanganui crews and Mr. A. J. Dunn coach of the Christ's College crews. The officials were: Starter, Mr. D. Holmes; judges, Messrs. P. Benefield and R. F. Boyland; umpire, Mr. M Eyres.
