FORMER TAIHAPE RESIDENT
MRS. N. KNAP’S DEATH AT WHAKATANE
The death occurred at her daughter's residence, Whakatane, last Tuesday, of Mrs. Nannie Knap, of Pipiroa, one of the pioneers of the Hauraki Plains. With her husband, the late Mr. John Henry Knap, Mrs. Knap was well known in the Taihape district during the early sawmilling days. Mrs. Knap, who was aged 79 years, was born at Renwick Town, Blenheim, spending her early life in that district. She married in Blenheim in 1883, later living in the Wairarapa and Taihape, coming to the Hauraki Plains in 1913. Mr. and Mrs Knap retired in Tailranga in 1929, but since 1933 Mrs. Knap had resided in and about the Thames Valley.
While on the Plains, Mrs. Knap took a keen interest in the social welfare of the district and was always a willing helper at any public function. She was a member of the Church of England on the Hauraki Plains.
Mrs. Knap, as one of the early settlers on the Plains, could vividly describe the hardships with which the people had to contend due to the lack of roads and other means of communication.
She is survived by her five sons, Messrs. Gus (Paeroa), Roland (Auckland), Albert (Rotorua). Robert (Upper Hutt) and Lewis (Te Puke), and her eight daughters, Mesdames Clara Waddell (Wellington) . Lillie Baird (Whakatane), Dorothy Bowers (Mangapeehi). Ethel Smallfield (KaiClara Waddell (Wellington), Lillie McOwn (Mamaku). Elsie Mangan (Pipiroa) and Margaret Hill (Auckland). She is also survived by 26 grandchildren and five great-grand-children.
