INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
DISPLAY OF HANDCRAFTS That the natural artistry and the creative ability of children can be developed to an astonishing degree was demonstrated during the past week at an exhibition of handcrafts given by pupils'* of the Intermediate School in connection with a daily programme held to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the founding of the school. Displayed in several classrooms the exhibits were viewed with much interest by a large number of parents and friends. In the display by pupils of Form I was a convoy of miniature ships of various types, with an air umbrella of tiny models of aeroplanes. These ships and planes were made during the boys’ leisure time. Something new was the exhibit of clay modelling, including figure and group studies, some glazed and baked, the work being very commendable. Mosaic-craft tiles, made of cork, leather strips and plaster, fretwork, cut-out pictures, studies of New Zealand birds made into pictures with flour paste in a delicate raised design, sewing, project work, patchwork, aprons, dolls’ outfits, smocking, also painted and lacquer woodwork showing considerable ability for first-year pupils, were among this group. In the Form II class exhibits were seen innumerable woodwork articles with painted designs, and all lacquered, ranging from stools, chairs, boxes of all sizes, bread-boards, letter-racks to teapot stands. There were knitting cases, book covers and bags in decorated felt work, bread brooches and necklets, a variety of parchment novelties, pewter work, including book-ends, also a large display of sketches, posters, scenes from nature, flower and figure studies. Some excellent projects were also displayed, also a great variety of maps.
