Rotary Club Speaker. The speaker at the Wanganui Rotary Club luncheon to-day will be Mr. C. H. Clinkard. The subject of his talk will be “The Kauri Trees of the Kaipara District.” Grass Fire. A call to a grass fire in the plantation at the real- of the isolation ward of the Wanganui Public Hospital was responded to yesterday afternoon b} the Central Fire Brigade. The fire was extinguished with one lead of 700 feet ’of hose. Slight damage was caused.

Christmas Dinner For Troops. The standing committee of the National Patriotic Fund Board has approved of a per capital grant again this yeap from patriotic funds to provide Christmas dinner extras for the New Zealand forces overseas. It is estimated that this will involve a total expenditure of between £7OOO and £BOOO. College Rowing. The annual boat races between the first and second fours of Christ’s College, Christchurch, and Wanganui Collegiate School will be held on the Wanganui River this morning. The events will be contested over the Aramoho course, finishing at the Aramoho wharf. The first fours race is timed to begin at 10 o’clock, and will be followed the second fours. Cricket Century. The first century in Wanganu cricket this season was scored by J. C. Hartgill, captain of the Wanganui Collegiate School first eleven. An opening batsman, his score of 101 not out, included 16 fours. The previous best individual score this season was made the previous Saturday by K. Millward, also a. member of the Collegiate School eleven, who hit up 97. Castlecliff Cottages. Inquiries made of agents and Castlecliff residents whose homes are sometimes let during the holiday season, indicate that seaside cottages will be in great demand this summer. Some beach cottages have already been booked for the whole season. Petrol rationing and travel restrictions over a long period have led many Wanganui and district residents, who would normally go further afield, to spend their holidays at Castlecliff. This has had the effect of increasing what has always been a big demand for accommodation.

Junior Tennis Players. The Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s decision to arrange a junior tournament this season has been welcomed by players of the various affiliated clubs in Wanganui. A tennis enthusiast said at the week-end that young players always enjoyed this event. The proposal to hold a veterans tournament has also received a good reception. The latter is regarded as a progressive move on the association’s part. When the last New Zealand championships were held in Wellington a contest for veterans met with so much success that in future it will be an annual event at championship games. Work of Nuns Praised.

The splendid work being carried out by the Sisters of St. Joseph in educating children in Wanganu i was referred to by the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, and Mr. J. B. Cotterill, M.P., at the official opening of the garden party at St. Mary’s Convent, Grey Street, on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Rogers said the nuns were working quietly and efficiently. They were performing a service which was of great value not only to Wanganui, but the Dominion as a whole. Mr. Cotterill said that the nuns were educating the children on a good Christian basis.

Ruapehu Home Guard. A competitive teams handicap shoot was held at the Pungatawa rifle range by the Headquarters Company of the Ruapehu Battalion of the Home Guard recently. Bad weather marred the shooting arid the attendance. However, the winning team, L. Sandliant, I. A. M. Scott and W. A. Bosher put up a good .performance with an .aggregate gross score of 133. R. Griffin, R. White and S. R. Gibbs were close up with 127. The best individual net score was made by Sergeant' L. Scott with 42. Other good scores were Corporal H. Gregory (41), Sergeant A. Gregory (41), and R- Culpitt (39).
