EXTRA TR'INS TO COPE WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC BUSY PERIOD EXPECTED Between Friday, December 17, and Saturday, January 8, no fewer than 51 extra express trains—27 each way —will run between Wellington and Auckland. Th,e specials have been arranged to cope with the heavy passengers traffic expected on the railways during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. In addition, 16 special trains—eight each way—will run between Wanganui and Wellington with the object of relieving congestion on the ordinary New Plymouth expresses. The extras are in addition to special night trains on Christmas Eve.

Comprehensive schedules arranged by the Rilways Department allow lor an extra express which will leave Wellington for Auckland at 3.42 p.m. from Friday, December 17, to Saturday, January 8, inclusive, except Sundays. Similarly, an extra express will leave Auckland for Wellington at 3.30 p.m. during the same period, except Sundays and Monday, January 3. On December 19 and 26 and January 2 and 9 (all Sundays) a special express will leave Auckland lor Wellington at 6 p.m. On the same days a special will leave Wellington at 3 p.m. for Auckland. In addition, a relief express will leave Auckland for Wellington at 7.35 p.m. on December 17, 23 and 24, and January 3. Relief expresses will leave Wellington for Auckland at 7.40 p.m. on December 17, 23 and- 24. This schedule allows for four expresses each way between Wellington and Auckland on Christmas Eve.

A relief express will leave Wanganui for Wellington al 11.35 a.m. on December 16, 17, 18, 23 and 24, and on January 1, 3 and 8. This train will run ahead of the southbound New Plymouth express and it was stated yesterday that all passengers from Wanganui and stations south of Aramoho must travel by this train, the object being to relieve congestion on the ordinary express. Similarly, a relief express will leave Wellington at 10.28 a.m. for Wanganui on December 16, 17, 18 and 23 and January 1, 3 and 8. With the object of relieving the northbound New Plymouth express, passengers for Wanganui and stations south of Aramoho must travel by the special. On Christmas Eve a relief express will leave Wellington at 10.28 a.m. and run through to New Plymouth. For tne convenience of people who are working in shops and other occupations on the night of Christmas Eve, special trains will run between Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth. An extra express is scheduled to leave Wellington at 11 p.m. on December 24 and is scheduled to reach Wanganui at 5.55 a.m. next day. This train will connect at Marton with the first express from Auckland. A special night train will also leave Wellington at 11.20 o’clock on Christmas Eve for New Plymouth, where it is due at 11.20 a.m. next day. A special to connect with this train will leave Wanganui at 6 a.m. People from Taranaki and Wanganui who wish to travel south on the night of Christmas Eve may do so by connecting with a train scheduled to leave New Plymouth at 10.30 p.m. and Aramoho at 2.55 a.m. (Christmas Day). A special to connect with this train, which is due to reach Wellington at 8.50 a.m., will leave Wanganui at 2.20 a.m. A connection will be provided at Palmerston North with a train for Napier.

Train services will be restricted in the Wanganui district on Christmas Day. The ordinary New Plymouth expresses and the “fliers” between Wellington and New Plymouth will run, also the early morning and late afternoon mixed trains between Wanganui and Palmerston North. Other trains and all freight sendees will be cancelled.
