TAIHAPE’S TOWN CLOCK
FUNDS BEING RAISED FOR ERECTION OF TOWER With the object of providing a tower for Taihape’s new town clock, the Mayor, Mr. E. Loader, has launched an appeal for funds, the objective being £l'2oo. The committee responsible for this work has unanimously decided that the tower will occupy a position at the corner of the triangle opposite the Post Office. ‘‘When the Postmaster-General, in his wisdom, and notwithstanding representations by the Taihape Borough Council that it should not be removed, sanctioned the demolition of the Post Office clock tower, the citizens of the town and.district immediately realised that there has been lost to the community an historic landmark a loss felt irretrievably by one and all,” said the Mayor in a statement yesterday. “The borough now has on its hands a splendid timekeeper and a set of chimes rating in quality as second to none throughout the Dominion. Moreover, both the clock and chimes were donated by a public-spirited citizen. At a public meeting convened to discuss the position, it was unanimously decided that a tower worthy of the town, and as a stimulus to its future progress, should be erected. A committee representative of the town and district was formed. Its organisation has been completed, and the public will, within the next fortnight, be invited to give donations to the fullest measure of their well-known generosity,’’ the Mayor added. “Collections in the town itself will be restricted, as far as practicable, to the business area. Circulars have been prepared and will be addressed to business principals and their starts. Authorised collectors will then call at the address to which each circular is directed. In the residential area, authorised collectors will call only at such homes as are not represented in the business area. The organisation of the county district has been left in the hands of Messrs. John Bartosh and Vivian Smith.”
