PETAIN MYSTERY
CONTRADICTORY REPORTS Recd. 6 p.m. London, Nov. 17. The mystery over Marshal Petain is deepening. Neither Vichy nor Paris radios' hourly news bulletins to-day mentioned Petain's activities, whicui arc always reported in detail, no matter how unimportant. This silence follows a complete Vichy radio blackout last night, and the lirst new s bulletin to-day was heavily jammed. Swiss reports at the week-end said that Petain was ill, but French radio reports yesterday said that he entertained a Turkish diplomat on Monday. The Stockholm newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, quoting authorised German circles, stated that Petain was expected to broadcast his cancelled weekend speech later, The speech would include news rf important political changes in the Vichy regime. The Paris Press is openly discussing the question of Petain’s successor.
