CRUISE OF SEA ROVER
WANGANUI VISIT TO BOOST SEA SCOUTING
Calls at several harbours in the North Lsland will be made this month by the small motor-vessel Sea Rover, the captain of which is the Dominion Sea Scout Commissioner, Alexander Black, of Dunedin. The vessel is expected to be at Wanganui on Saturday and Sunday, November 27 and 2b. Commissioner Black is making his tour with the main object of increasing interest in the Sea Scout movement and inducing more boys in coastal area§ to take up this phase of Scouting. “The sea is our heritage. We must know how to use it and we must get to know and love it,” said Commissioner Black, outlining the purpose of his tour. He believes that there should be thousands of boys in New Zealand who would be Sea Scouts if they had the opportunity, and during his visits to various ports he hopes ta trv and make this possible. Commissioner Black holds the belief that by coming in from the sea in his own vessel he will be able to do much more for the boys than travelling around in the orthodox method and just talking to them. The Sea Rover has a length of 52 feet and beam of 14 feel. It was built to Commissioner Black’s own specifications, and although finished only a few months ago, has already done several sea voyages. Commissioner Black has been interested in Sea Scouting since his boyhood days, and before his appointment to Dominion status was Scoutmaster of the Anderson Bay (Dunedin) Sea Scout Group, which he helped tn build up to a high state of efficiency. v
