CRICKET IN WANGANUI

ASSOCIATION REPORT. Despite the fact that during the past season clubs found it difficult to field teams of full strength, a successful season was registered, states the report of the Wanganui Cricket Association to be tabled at the annual meeting to-night by the president, Mr. E. Manley. One-day matches were again played last season, continued the report, and proved most successful, but because of bad weather competitions were curtailed. The one-day games were again of great assistance to clubs who might have been unable to field the same team for two consecutive Saturdays. Clubs had a successful year with the exception of the United and the Garrison Band Clubs which went into recess for the duration of the war. New teams were Army in the senior competition and Air Training Corps in the junior competition. The Army team was compelled to withdraw early in the season because it was transferred from the district.

Although the coming season would be more difficult than the preceding one, it should be most successful, as clubs reported good membership. The report also states that the association’s management committee endeavoured to arrange representative fixtures, but because of petrol restrictions its effort were unsuccessful.

Among association officers who are in the armed forces are the chairman of the management committee, Mr. W. H. Bickley, the treasurer, Mr. J. K. Glover, and members of the management committee, Messrs. A. Guy and H. Cuming.
