MAXIMUM PRICES

WIDE VARIETY OF ITEMS (P.A.) Wellington, Sept. 30. Numerous garments made from knitted materials or textile piece goods wholly or partially manufactured from New Zealand wool (such as underwear, pullovers, suits, overcoats, and frocks) and other items, such as footwear, hosiery, gloves, blankets, mattresses and pillows, and knitting wools were declared in March last to be within the provision of the Control of Prices Emergency regulations. To give traders an opportunity to make application for fixing maximum prices for such goods, the Price Tribunal has hitherto refrained from issuing the second notice contemplated by the regulations, which prohibits the sale of such goods unless maximum prices have been fixed for them. The Tribunal has now issued the second notice, but it allows a further 21 days before enforcement to give traders a final opportunity to apply for fixing maximum prices. The Tribunal explains that the great majority of the articles listed have already been the subject of price authorisations or price orders, but as •many of them have been considered by traders to be outside the regulations, and as it is essential, in view of the stabilisation policy, that maximum prices be defined, the notices have been issued to clarify the position.
