FREE FRENCH DEFENCE CHIEF

Rec. 6 p.m. Algiers, Sept. 28. General Paul Legentilhomme has been appointed Commissioner of National Defence. He was formerly Commissioner for War in General de Gaulle's Free French Committee in London, and later became French High Commissioner in ths Indian Ocean zone.

The appointment is regarded as a sign of the National Committee's determination not to allow General Giraud to have overriding powers.
