E-BOATS INTERCEPTED
SHELLED BY CORVETTE PUFFIN (Special Correspondent— N.Z.I*.A.) Recd. 6 pan. London, Sept. 27. A group of E-boats was intercepted and engaged in the North Sea at cluse range in bad visibility on September 25 by the corvette Puffin, commanded by ’Lieutenant-Commander A. S. Miller (Takapuna). The E-boats retired behind a smoke screen but not before several shells found their mark. . Lieutenant-Commander Miller said: “The fight took place at top speed. We managed to close to ’.short range and keep up a heavy barrage of fire, to which the enemy, who was concentrated on eluding us, made little reply. Although the enemy made as much use as possible of his smoke screen we saw him under the light of our star ’shells and we appeared to score several hits, but it was not possible to observe results.”
