PROGRESS WITH REPAIRS
RANGITIKEI COUNTY ROADS CLEARING FLOOD DAMAGE Fair weather during the month had enabled good progress to be made with the task of clearing slips and flood damage on roads in the Rangitikei County, stated the engineer, Mr. S. A. R. Mair, at the council s monthly meeting in Marton yesterday. Cr. K. W. Dalrymple presided, also in attendance being Crs. G. L. Marshall, A. S. Coleman, J. Brice, L. Hammond, A. D. Mair, L. E. Deacon, V. Smith, and W. Doole, and Messrs. H. H. Richardson (county clerk), A. V. Brown (assistant county clerk), and the engineer. In a detailed report of the various ridings, the engineer stated that the road from Scott’s Ferry to Moanaroa township (Rangitoto Riding) suffered considerable damage because of All Force traffic, but had not been repaired. The road extension to the beach was out of repair and flooded in places, but improvements would be carried out when the weather permitted. Routine maintenance had been carried out on all other roads in the riding and attention had been given to the plantation near the Bulls Bridge. A road reserve of several acres on the Santoft Road had been planted with macrocarpo trees. The Wangaehu and Turakina Valley Roads in the Otakapu Riding had been trimmed with a grader, and
slips in the Haunui drainage area cleared. ‘‘The Turakina River has cut a new channel to the sea through the ’sandspit about 60 chains above Koi ti ata township,” the engineer added. All roads in the Porevva Riding were in fair order, and in the Wangaehu Riding slips had been cleared from roads in the OkiraeOhaumoko district. All slips on the Turakina Valley Road, as iar as the Ongo Road, had been opened sufficiently for traffic to pass. When labour became available the road would be fully repaired. In the Otairi Riding the deck of the Turakina Bridge at Braemore had been coated with tar and chips. Repairs to the approach of the llautawa Bridge were in hand. Temporary repairs were made last month to the Porewa Bridge- Slips were cleared from the Majuba Hill and the Watershed Road was open for traffic, but further repairs would be carried out when labour was available. This length was still without a roadman. All roads in the Awarua Riding had been opened for traffic and full repairs would be made a-s soon as possible. In the Tekapua Riding slips had been clearer! sufficiently to open all roads for traffic, but with the labour available it would take about two months to complete repairs. Most of the work yet to be carried out was on the Upper Turakina Valley Road, above Pukeroa. All roads in the Erewhon and Ruanui Ridings were open for traffic. The next meeting of the Rangitikei County Council will be held in Marton on October 7.
