PATEA FREEZING WORKS

FIRE BRIGADE MEETING. (0,C.) Patea, Aug. 28. A credit balance of £2B Is. an increase of £8 5s 7d on the previous \ ear's balance, was reported at the annual meeting of the Patea freezing works lire brigade over which the superintendent, Mr. C. H. Carey presided. Otiicers elected were: Superintendent, Mr. Carey: deputy superintendent, Mr. A. J. Willis; foreman, Mr. J. W. Field; secretary, Mr. G. O. Cosford. Fireman W. Old was appointed to act with the officers on the general committee. Service honours presented were: Two-year gold bar, Mr. Carey (total service 35 years, 32i years being spent with the Patea brigade); two-year silver bar, Mr. Wills total service 12 years, 10 years being spent with the Patea brigade). Competition trophies presented were: Chairman’s cup, Fireman B. Minton; Mr. Naismith’s trophy, Mr. Cosford; Mr. Harkness’ trophy, Fireman W. Old; Mr. Cosford’s trophy. Mr. Carey; Mr. Ramsbottom’s trophy, Fireman H. Bayley; Mr. Wills’ trophy, Fireman H. Bayley auxiliary members’ trophy, Fireman B. Minton. Trophies for the coming year were offered by Messrs. C. D. Dickie, E. Taylor, F. Ramsbottom, F. Naismith and I. Harkness. At the conclusion of the meeting visitors were entertained by brigade members at a social evening when items were given by Messrs. W. Rogers, S. Russell, A. West, W. Field, J. Hempstalk, C. H. Carey and R. M. Willis.

21st. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED. There were 130 guests in the Druids’ Hall recently, when Miss Hilda Davidson was the guest of honour at a social and dance on the occasion of her 21st. birthday. Guests were present from Auckland, New Plymouth, Tongaporutu and Wanganui and were welcomed by Mr. A. Davidson. The chairman for tne evening was the Mayor of Patea (Mr. F. Ramsbottom) who in presenting a key to Miss Davidson congratulated her on her becoming of age and wished her a very happy future. Other speakers were Messrs. H. A. Boswell, and J. Haworth. Items were

given by Mrs. F. Lund. Miss T. Ward, Messrs. H. Jenkins and J. Haworth. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. Cowie and Mr. J. W. Appleton. Mr. J. Haworth was M.C.
