PATEA COOL STORES. LESS PRODUCE HANDLED. (0.C.) Patea, Aug. 28. Commenting that in view of the fact that New Zealand was required to feed its own people, others in th© United Kingdom and U.S. servicemen in the South Pacific, the chairman of directors, Mr. F. Parsons, stated at the annual meeting of the West Coast Refrigerating Company at Patea that the Dominion should be increasing its farm and factory production, rather than showing a decrease. Representatives of South Taranaki dairy companies holding shares in the West Coast Refrigerating Company attended the meeting and it was stated that the total produce received in the stores last season showed a decrease of 123 tons on a butterfat basis, compared with tlie previous year. This figure included 31,550 crates of cheese diverted on instructions from the Internal Marketing Department to the Auckland grading stores. With farm labour proolems and lack of sufficient fertilisers to maintain production, as well as the lateness of the new season to date, prospects were not bright for any great increass this year, Mr. Parsons added. Under the conditions in which the works were operating the balancesheet could be considered satisfactory. After making a pro rata rebate of £l7OO to shareholding companies, writing off £2124 9s 4d for depreciation and providing £1477 15s 6d for charges accruing on unshipped produce, the balance-sheet disclosed a net profit of £62 8s transferred to the appropriation account. Space on overseas vessels allocated to the company had been consistently tilled, and of the 27,930 tons of dairy produce despatched 7.30 per cent, or 21,038 tons, were shipped through the port of Patea, stated the secretary, Mr. G. W. Corbett. Of the latter quantity, 92.33 per cent., equivalent to 19,425 tons, was carried by vessels of the South Taranaki Shipping Company. Railage of whey butter to Auckland for dehydration purposes and consignments of cheese to the same destination to facilitate loading of overseas vessels were the factors largely responsible for the decreased shipment direct from Patea. The retiring directors. Messrs. F. Parsons and G. H. Meuli, were reelected and Mr. E. K. Cameron was re-appointed auditor. APPEAL SUCCEEDS TAUPO TOTARA TIMBER CO. (P.A.) Welligton, Aug. 27. The Court of Appeal to-day delivered judgment in the case of a petition by the Taupo Totara Timber Co., Ltd. (heard from June 20 onward). The appeal was from a decision of the Supreme Court refusing to confirm a reduction of capital of the company involving repayment to shareholders of about £34,000 on the grounds that New Zealand Forest Products Ltd., owner of valuable adjoining forests, might have at some future time large claims to make against the Taupo Totara Timber Co., Ltd., for damage arising from forest fires. Judgment of the court was delivered by Mr. Justice Kennedy. After dealing with the function of the Court of Appeal on an appeal in the matter of discretion the judgment states that power to confirm a reduction is discretionary. Admitting the possibility of future damage to New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., the case was not one where the court was justified in refusing to confirm a reduction The appeal was therefore allowed with costs and the reduction to be confirmed. TEACHER AS BATMAN (P.A.) Invercargill, Aug. 27. A letter complaining of the menial duties at which he was employed in the Air Force, duties quite inconsistent with his qualifications as a University graduate, was received from a member of the Air Force at a meeting of the Southland Education Board to-day. When he joined the Army the writer of the letter was a schoolteacher and stated that he had been selected from a large number of applicants for a position at the Tweed Street Intermediate School. “It is a very strong indictment and it seems to me that there is a very serious question 1o answer here,” was the comment of the chairman, Mr. S. Rice, after the letter had been read. “We want to do everythin" we can for the war effort but I think we are entitled to express disapproval of this sort of thing,’’ said M’. Rice. “It is absurd that a qualified man like this should be used as a batman. I know something of the Army and I know just what this man has had to submit to. This man was selected for a position at the Intermediate School from a large number of applicants. That shows his ability, and to employ him in this wav is sheer economic waste.' FISHING LAUNCH WRECKED (P.A.) Blenheim. Aug. 27. The 10-ton fishing launch Bettylo was wrecked on the Cook Strait coast, just north of Tory Channel, and the 26-foot launch she had been towing is adri f t or sunk, as a result of an accident in the Straits on Monday. The Bettylo, under the command or her owner. C. Dawson, accompanied by Kevin Dawson and Bob Grinwald, all of Wellington, left Wellington on Monday morning for the Marlborough Sounds, towing a small launch belonging to Flying-Officer R. C. King, who is et a station in Marlborough. Out in the Straits the Bettylo’s tailshaft broke loose. The helpless boats drifted up and down the Strait until Tuesday evening, when a severe storm blew up. The small launch had to ! be cast adrift, and the Bettylo, under an improvised sail, reached the coast and anchored after a wild night. A Glidden change of tide on Wednesday morning swept the boat on to the rocks, where she became a total loss. The crew managed to reach safety at the only landing-place in the vicinity. Neither boat was insured. Dawson estimates his loss at £9OO. DOW JONES AVERAGES. New York, Auk. 28. —: (001 B|vnbo naaujOAß sauof MOf[ 20 Rail- 32 Share* road'.
