FIRST OFFENDER FINED
GAMING CHARGE ADMITTED. “As this is your first offence, and having regard to the small volume of business, you will be convicted and lined £2O, with costs,” said Mr. J. H. Salmon. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday after Henry Sherman, butcher, had admitted keeping his premises as a common gaming house. Material found on defendant’s premises at 1 p.m. last Saturday showed that he had taken 41 bets that day, ranging from £1 to 2s 6d and totalling £l5 12s 6d, said DetectiveSergeant J. K. Robertson. He added that a few months ago defendant started taking bets as an agent. Mr. C F. Treadwell submitted that defendant had oeen operating as an agent only and did so merely to oblige customers. He was not in a large way of business. Court costs amounted to 10s.
