UNFAIR DISTRIBUTION
N.Z. TOBACCO SUPPLIES (P.A.) Invercargill, Aug. 27. “That this chamber call on the Minister oi Supply to implement his statement as reported in the press on August 19 that everything had been done to esure the most eqj. table distribution of tobacco and cigarettes by forthwith cancelling the arrangement whereby extra supplies are being made available to workers in certain industries, thereby unfairly favouring those sections of the civilian population.” This motion was handed to the press at a meeting of the council of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce yesterday, after a discussion in committee. The council went into committee to consider a report on the matter from a sub-committee of the council, and when the council resumed in open meeting Mr. G. J. Reed said he objected to the motion that had been passed in committee. He thought that the council should be very sure of the question. It had been referred to the Associated Chambers of Commerce and the council shou’d wait for a reply from that body before taking action. He moved an ’amendment that the matter be held over until a reply was received from the Associated Chambers. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder and the motion was then put in open meeting and carried.
