MARTON NOTES

UNITED SERVICES’ CLUB “A HOME AWAY FROM HOME” The United Services’ Club, which was opened in September, 1942, has proved a great boon to servicemen and women who visit Marton and have some spare time. The sitting-room has been furnished with gifts of tables, chairs, easy chairs, a settee, a piano, gramophones and ' radio set, with an attractive gas heater. The sports room is equipped with a table tennis set. bagatelle table, dart board and evening games. The kitchen is well equipped with all the necessary utensils, and hot and cold water baths are always obtainable. The United Services’ Club is comprised of members of the Rangitikei Navy League, Women’s Institute, Ladies’ Club. St. John Ambulance, Mothers’ Union. W.D.F.U., W.W.S.A., St. Stephen’s Church. St. Andrew's Church, St. Francis’ Church, Lutheran and Methodist Church, each organisation taking three days a month on duty. Meals and teas are- served at all haul's at a small charge. It is interesting to glance through, the visitors’ book and study the quaint, humorous, and congratulatory remarks penned by the visitor.*. In the twelve months to date 2580 servicemen and women have visited the club. Many have expressed their appreciation of the cordial reception that has been accorded them, and also for the dainty afternoon and morning teas, breakfasts and dinners that have been provided for them by this willing and capable band of workers. DAFFODIL AND SPRING FLOWER SHOW

The annual daffodil and spring flower show, in conjunction with Marton Parochial District Guild, will be held in the Civic Theatre. Marton, on Tuesday, September 21. Schedules can now be obtained on application to Mr. Alan Gordon, secretary (telephone, 2150, Marton).

CR. K. FOWLER ENTERTAINED Members of the Marton Borough Council and staff gathered at the Council Chambers on Friday evening to extend their good wishes to Cr. K. H. Fowler on the eve of his marriage to Miss Joan Sutcliffe. The Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) referred to the interest that Cr. Fowler had taken In the affairs of the council and the progress of the borough. As a member of the Works Committee Cr. Fowler had given valuable assistance, and also as a member of the E.P.S. organisation. The Mayor congratulated him on his approaching marriage to Miss Joan Sutcliffe, who was a member of highly respected and early citizens of Ihe town and wished them every happiness in their new’ sphere of life On behalf of those present Mr. Purnell presented Mr. Fowler with a cheque, accompanied by their best wishes. Crs. T. Barton. W. J. Mogridge, J. R. Howard, A. Mclndoe, and Messrs C. C. McDonald, W. Briant and Holden also added their tribute of congratulations and good wishes.

Cr. Fowler replied that the gathering and presentation was quite a surprise. He thanked the speakers for their kind and appreciative remarks and handsome gift. RANGITIKEI ELECTORATE

MR. E. B. GORDON’S CAMPAIGN Mr. E. B. Gordon. National candidate for Rangitikei, will commence his campaign to-day (Monday), when he will address electors at Rewa Hall at 2 p.m., and at Waituna West Hal! at 8 p.m. On Tuesday, at Parewanui School at 2 p.m., and at Turakina Hall at 8 p.m; on Wednesday at Putorino School at. 1.30 p.m., and at. Max Hall, Mangaweka. at 8 p.m., and at Marton Town Hall on Thursday, September 2, at 8 p.m.

LABOUR PARTY’S CAMPAIGN Corporal R. Freeman, Labour candidate for Rangitikei, starts his electioneering campaign on Wednesday, September 1, when Mr. H E. Coombes, M.P., will address the electors at Durie Hill School at 8 p.m.. and at ?4angaweka Hall on Thursday, September 2. at 8 p.m. Corporal R. Freeman, R.N.Z.A.F.. and Lieut. .1 B. Cotterill M.P., will speak at Upokongaro Hall at 8 p.m. on Friday, September DANCE AT TURAKINA A dance will be held in the Turakina Hall on Thursday, September 2, in aid of the hall funds. Music will be provided by Alex Wright. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON “TEXAS” (TUESDAY) A motion picture said to move with the speed of: a blazing bullet, “Texas, ’ at the Civic Theatre to-morrow, describes that historic period in America’s development when the Kansas Pacific Railroad finally reached Abilene. Kansas, and Texas cattlemen battled their way through 1000 miles of bandit-ridden country to deliver to the railhead their beef on the hoof. “Texas” describes, as well, the stirring struggles of reckless men and fearless women to carve life, love and fortune out of the newly-won frontier. William Holden and Glenn Ford are seen as youthful adventurers, trigger-quick to defend freedom and defy injustice; Miss Trevor is seen as the fighting, vixenish daughter of the plains who finds difficult choosing between the two. Others in the cast include George Bancroft, Edgar Buchanan, Don Beddoe. Williard Robertson, and Addison Richards. M.U.1.0.0.F. A meeting of the Loyal Marton Lodge was held in the Druids’ Hall, Marton, on Wednesday evening, August 25, N.G. Sis. M. Wilson presiding. Another full benefit member was initiated into the Order. After the business was disposed of the meeting closed and the members participated in table tennis competitions, items being presented at intervals.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday. September 8.
