IMPROVED OYSTERING
SOUTHERN FLEET'S RETURNS. Although an exceptionally poor period for oystering was experienced last month and the Bluff vessels were held up in port, the last fortnight has been particularly favourable and returns have been excellent. One Bluff oyster merchant stated that the catch for his company’s vessel was already 600 sacks ahead of last year’s returns for the same period. As last year was a record season, he considered that the prospects for the present year were bright. Because of the heavy demand for oysters for canning, supplies of fresh shellfish‘available for northern centres have not been so good, particularly at times when the weather has prevented the vessels from leaving port. As far as possible supplies are being sent north, but the demand for canned oysters for the armed forces is par-| ticularly heavy.
