CORPORAL R. FREEMAN AT MARTON The first shots of Labour’s campaign were fired in tne Civic Theatre, Marton, on Wednesday, August 25, when Corporal R. Freeman opened his campaign, ably assisted by Mr. A. H. Langslow (Labour candidate for Patea) and Corporal Oliver (Labour candidate for Manawatu). The speaker was introduced by the Deputy-Mayor. Mr. G. B. Gregory, who stated that it was a unique occasion, as the three candidates and he were all returned soldiers. On rising to speak Corporal Freeman was greeted with loud applause by a large and enthusiastic audience. Corporal Freeman stated that this was not his policy speech, but that he would return at a later date and give the policy of the Labour Party. The object of this meeting was to allow the electors to judge for themselves the type of individual that was offering their services for Labour in the surounding constituencies. The candidate briefly outlined Labour’s financial policy. At the conclusion of his address a number of questions were answered to the satisfaction of the questioner. A vote of thanks and confidence in Corporal Freeman, and the Labour Party was carried unanimously. DANCE AT EMPIRE HALL . The Bonny Glen district committee of the combined shop is holding a dance in the Empire Hall, Marton, tomorrow (Saturday) night in aid of funds for the Mayor’s Comforts Fund. Bright music, good ooflr. novelty dances and supper will be featured. HUN ETR VILLE “G” BABY PATRIOTIC “SHOP” The Hunterville Ladies’ Patriotic. Red Cross and W.W.S.A. members are holding a combined shop in aid of the “G” Baby to-morrow (Saturday), which will open from 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m. Gifts of produce will be thankfully acknowledged. MARTON HOME GUARD In yesterday’s issue it was stated (hat Marton Homo Guard B Company would hold a smoke concert and dance in the Druids’ Hall. Marton, tomorrow (Saturday), at 8 p.m. This is an error. B Company are holding a smoke concert only. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON "ARE HUSBANDS NECESSARY?’’ Starring Ray Mil land and Betty Field, and with such capable supporting players as gorgeous Patricia Morison, Eugene Paiiette, Charles Dingle, Leif Erickson. Elizabeth Ridson and Richard Haydn, "Are Husbands Necessary?" at the Civic Theatre, tells the hilarious story of a young married couple who try to get ahead in the world by “whittling’ telling little white lies. Where the lies lead and what complications they cause must be left for you to find out when you see the picture, but you can take this reviewer’s word for it they result in plenty of first-class excitement. A splendid associate programme completes the bill of fare. First there is a new March of Time —"The New Canada." and in addition a Pluto Cartoon, Popeye Cartoon. Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood, Metro Newsreel and, of course, the serial. MARTON LADIES’ GOLF CLUB A bogey match will be played on the Marton golf links to-morrow. Tne draw will be made at 1.15 p.m. at tne clubhouse. Last week’s Stableford match was won by Mrs. B. Cochran with 31 points. MARTON SALVATION ARMY ANNIVERSARY I In connection with the 52nd anniversary celebrations of the Salvation j Army‘in Marlon corps on August 28 I and ‘29, a special entertainment will I be given on Saturday night at 7.45 by ■ a lady from Sweden, Mrs. Captain | Gray will be dressed in Swedish cosItume and will give an interesting description of that wonderful country and its people, also the work of the Salvation Army in that land. Supper will be served at the close. Mrs. Gray, who has a charming personality, will also conduct meetings on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m ; There will be no meeting on Sunday night. PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS DANCE The plain and fancy dress dance organised by the Tutaenui Hall committee, and’held on Wednesday evening, attracted a record attendance. There were quite a number of dances in national, novelty and humorc>is tancy dresses, and presented a mcturesque setting. Mr. T. Hartley supplied the music and Mrs. Bostock and Mrs. R. riarvey contributed extras. The Royal‘picture was won by Mr. D. i Paterson, who gave it back for another competition, which was won by ■ Sergeant D. Hawkins. The supper was under the auspices of the ladies’ committee and Mr. D. Paterson made a capable M.C. In response to numerous requests another dance will be held on September 14. MARTON BRANCH LABOUR PARTY A meeting of the Marton branch of the Labour Party will bo held in the Druids’ Hall, to-night (Friday) at 8 p POPULAR POST OFFICE OFFICIAL On the eve of her approaching mar- > riage Miss Joan Sutcliffe, who is leaving the staff of Marton Post Office, was entertained by the members of the staff on Wednesday evening. Pleasing references to Miss Sutcliffe’s work during her term of office was made by the postmaster (Mr. F. Mairs), who referred to the ability • and cheerfulness which Miss Sulclifte had displayed, and expressed the regret of himself and the staff at her leaving. A presentation of a fruit bowl was then made to Miss Sutcliffe. Messrs. A. Hutton and W. J. Donovan spoke in a similar strain. Mr. Ken Fowler responded on behalf of his fiancee, thanking the staff for their good wishes and present. P.O.W. RELATIVES ASSOCIATION A reminder is given to all those interested that the next meeting of t'ae association will be held in tne Red Cross rooms. High Street. Marton, on Tuesday, August 31, at 2.30 p.m.
