FIRE DESTROYS FACTORY

(P.A.' Christchurch, Aug. 25. Fire gutted the factorv of Provita Mills. Ltd., Ferry Road. Christchurch, early this afternoon. Stocks and machinery valued at between £BOOO and £9OOO were destroyed and only the brick walls of the building remain. The factory was carrying abnormally large stocks, including a consignment of cornflour for the North Island. Production had onlv recently been commenced with a new American system of producing cornflour which was expected to treble the factory’s output. Special temperaturerecording instruments and other valuable continental and American machinery are also a total loss. The fire started in a drying duct in th cornflour plant, and fanned by a strong south-west wind soon gained a good hold on the building. The insurances on the stock and machinery are not expected to cover the losses. The insurances were unavailable to-dav.
