SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mrs. J. M. Graham, of Dannevirke, was a visitor to Wanganui yesterday. Mrs. E. A. Brown, of Taoroa, Taihape, and Mrs. W. Patterson, of Wellington, are visiting their mother, Mrs., C. A. Piper, Heads Read. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner, who have been visiting Wanganui as the guests of Mr. Preston, returned to Auckland yesterday. Mrs A. Rutter, wife of Dr. Rutter, a former medical missionary in the Solomons, who is to address a meeting of the Trinity Methodist Missionary Auxiliary to-day, arrives from Marton this morning. She will be the guest ot Mrs. E. M. Peters, 49 College Street, during her stay in Wanganui.

HITHER AND THITHER. Successful Shop Day. To assist the members of the Wanganui Girls’ College Old Girls’ Associatin, who are candidates in the Popular Girl contest for raising funds for patriotic purposes, the association held a shop day yesterday in the Majestic Building. The helpers were Mesdames Rennie, C. Beattie. Richardson, C. Gardner, Misses D. McGregor, M. Edwards and I. Cordingley. Girl Guide Evening. The Maxwell Girl Guides held a Guide evening on August 21, in aid of tne Baden Powell Memorial Fund. In their games, songs, and stories .they tried to convey to their audience the aims and purposes of Guiding, a very difficult thing to do on a first-class dance floor. The most impressive item was a Camp Fire Ceremonial. Colleen Green composed the words of a song, which was very good. Through the sale of handwork, sweets, etc., made by the Guides, donations and door takings, they raised £5. O’iiakune Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Ohakune W.I. was held in the Railway Social Hail on Tuesday last, Mrs. Harris presiding. Mrs. Kerr gave an interesting and instructive report on her attendance at the Dominion conference in Gisborne, with many amusing! sidelights. Mrs. Southon demon-, strated the making of flaky pastry. Competition results were as folLruws:—Premier flower, Mrs. Burling, 1; scones, Mrs. Townson 1; sewing, Mrs. Woodward 1, Mrs. Townson 2. Fordell Women’s Institute. The monthly meeting of the Fordell Women’s Institute was held in the church hall on August 17. The president, Mrs. Bruce, presided over a good attendance. Mrs. Power (secretary), read the correspondence. During the month 41 parcels had been sent to local boys serving overseas. Donations for the A.N.A. Club were asked for. Mrs. Power, who was the Fordell delegate to the Gisborne conference read a very interesting report. The smocking demonstration was given by Mrs. W. Stewart. Competitions lor re-knitted garments were won by Mrs. Campbell 1, Mrs. Lloyd 2, ana Mrs. Stewart 3; best leek, Miss Flyger 1, Mrs. Christie 2, Mrs. Gilligan 3. Afernoon tea was served by Me.saames Webster, Power, R. Stewart, and K. Aiken.
