DEATH BY SCALDING. INQUEST ON THREE MEN. (P.A.) Auckland, Aug. 24. An inquest into the death ot three men who were scalded wnen a valvi ot a boiler was ruptured on a United States Navy vessel at Auckland oa June 14 was held by the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt. The victims were Chief Water-Tender Joseph Francis Mulcahy, aged 40, single, United States Navy; Duncan Maearthur, plasterer l and labourer, aged 33, married, of i Point Chevalier; and Granville Hen- ' dry Malins, welder, aged 28, married, ■of Williams Avenue. The latter were employed by Seagar Brothers. The only survivor of the accident, Thomas J. Barclay, said he was employed with the others in the Are room above the boilers in welding leaks in the oil tank. He noticed a leak at the joint of a valve leading from the boiler. He later heard two quick “water-hammers.” There was a hiss of steam and the blast struck him in the peace. He managed to lie where he could get fresh air until he was helped out. Harold McKubre, foreman, said he 'had informed the officer in charge about the leaking valve. Mulcahy had come down to fix it. In answer to the coroner, Jonathan Forster, surveyor of ships. Marine Department, said there was nothing to show negligence on anyone’s part. The cause of the accident was the rupture of an isolating valve on the starboard boiler. The metal, which was cast iron, showed no defects at the fracture. A verdict that death was caused when a valve fractured and the three men were scalded, was returned. THE WEATHER (Special).
